If there was ever a medium for kids to express their talents, then we would have a million of the Amarachi’s of Nigeria’s Got talent, Ozzybosco, Benita and many more. In the dying days of extra curriculum activities among students, there’s a messiah that’s here to rescue and discover them young.

Simply known as “Sing for Joy”, a competitive avenue put together by Kiddies Heritage Initiative, an NGO based on discovering the best of kids and teenagers. Since 2009 in Abuja, the show has produced young talents, willing to go and aim high in their fields with the sky as their starting point. From 7 year olds playing the piano, to the 16 year olds singing like the Georgia mass choir and the 12 year olds making the dance stunts unexpected of them, the show has been an avenue for surprises. In 2009 Community Secondary school won the first edition for secondary Category, while Intelli child schools won the primary category, Community went on and achieved the same feet the next year in the primary and secondary categories. St augustine and Regina patrick schools have also claimed Gold at the competition.

Its 2014, and the show is determined to reach the hooks and cranny of Nigeria, in achieving that goal, it has decided to move down to Lagos. Since November 2013 preparations have been made, schools reached and phone calls made. We believe in the talents of these young peers whom we should nurture from their early ages so as to set a pace to their development that won’t be met by even the fastest of cars.

The Lagos showdown is planned to bring in schools from the 20 LGA of the state, with support from DAAR GROUP, Owners of AIT, Raypower and Faaji FM, there is enough publicity for the show. It would feature Primary, secondary, or groups of talented youths to contest in an healthy environment.

Finally, It would be of great pleasure when this showpiece is finally put in the history books when our past winners end up as future celebrities in their chosen fields.

Desperation of an African boy | Peak Milk Scratch and win Promo…

Peak Scratch and win…

It was the year 2006, I was still in Primary 4 of Elias Int. School, the school was close to my mums business premises so I had the freedom of moving out of school at break periods to collect stuffs from my mum. This faithful day, I had just left school for my mums shop with my Ghanian classmate Kofi, Kofi and I had been putting up piles of Peak tin wrappers hoping we would win the grand prize of 1 million naira and become the youngest millionaire in Nigeria. That the kofi brought 3 more to make our wrappers 80pieces.

We rushed out as I rang the bell for break time, (I was the first ever time-keeper of the Primary school) after taking my lunch pack from mum, we took to haste and queued up on the line. By 11;55 it was just 2 people before it would be my turn, and I was to ring the bell by 12 noon, angry and confused I decide to wait and as I played and scratched a portion of the paper where the prizes where adorned with shiny but soft coverings, the word “Try” showed to me and I never managed to scratch “again”!!!!

It was 12:05, By now Kofi had seen his own “try again” too and we were headed back for school, on getting there, the Director of studies was at the gate, furious that the school wasn’t rang for classes after 7 minutes late ( my assistant doesn’t know time). On seeing me coming from outside, My hell was prepared for me, I and Kofi were flogged thoroughly and ever since that day, I never cried for being flogged again. (Maybe it was good after all) 😀
Bad news was, we didn’t win anything, not even a pen, as everyone in the classroom later heard of why we were punished, they never stopped laughing, we were nicknamed “Youngest millionaire” around the whole school (It was a primary and secondary school in one building) I kinda loved the publicity then sha. Did someone even win the grand prize? I can’t remember sef.
