Mavin Records – Understanding Africa’s Best Music Label

An Organization chart of Mavin Records

An Organization chart of Mavin Records

The Nigerian music industry is one that should be paid a heavy deal of attention as the drama, hits and beats, tunes and so on come out everyday, and fans can’t just help but show their dancing steps. Today, I want to examine one of Nigerias finest record labels, Yes, a record labels run by Nigeria’s finest and are the hottest at this stage. Am taking a look at there artists, producers, and were I see them in a few years.

Don Jazzy

Don Jazzy

Firstly, MAVIN Records
Don Jazzy – President
Mavin Records is run by Don Jazzy, the man believed to have popularised Nigerian pop music to the world by his tutelage of D’banj with which they founded the now defunct Mo’hits records. Don jazzy, born has a distinct bass voice, which he adds to his artist records, he can be heard singing the first verse of Tiwa Savage’s Eminado, the chorus for Dr Sid’s Surelere, adding an adlib to Korede Bello’s African princess and so on. Don Jazzy, is still single, *Girls can apply* but if he’s searching, me I don’t know o!!! 🙂

Mavin Record Producers, Babyfresh and altims

Mavin Record Producers, Babyfresh and altims

Altims
“Aluku Timothy” (popularly known as Altims) – Record Producer
Altims is the record producer and sound
engineer currently signed to Mavin Records.
While studying Computer engineering at the
University of Benin, Altims became an
amateur rapper. His background and
familiarity with Afrobeat, Hiphop, and
electronic sounds have enabled him to work
with the likes of Wande Coal, Dr SID, Southern
Park, Wayd, Michael Demi, Xvol, Mi Fliss,
Fombo, and Squeeze
among others. He has
produced various jingles/soundtracks for
several different organisations and released
official remixes of tracks from Mavin’s
compilation album, Solar Plexus. Don Jazzy added altims because he believed he “was getting old” and needed to do less work and let the younger brains take over.

Baby Fresh-Producer
“Sunday Enejere” (popularly known as Baby
Fresh), is also a record producer
currently signed to the aforementioned label.
According to Gistreel, Enejere “has a
signature sound which has made him instantly
identifiable amongst music aficionados. With
an eclectic mix borne of different music
genres, BabyFresh has already stamped his
trademark on dozens of hit singles.”

D'prince

D’prince

D’prince– Artist
Younger brother to Don Jazzy, D’prince is rather regarded as the less seen figure of the label, although he features a lot for other artist signed to the label. His latest single Gentleman ft Davido and Don Jazzy is also one that’s not to be thrown in the dustbin of personal anger as the beat, rhyme and Davido’s scintillating voice makes me go Ojigbijigbi

Dr Sid

Dr Sid

Dr Sid– Artist
Dr Sid, the dentist turned musician is the son of late veteran Nollywood actor, Justice Esiri, notable for his role as the Village Headmaster in a Nigerian sitcom popular in the 1980’s. Dr sid was a part of the defunct Mo’Hits records. His tenor based voice is his distinct trademark. Since the inception of Mavin Records, Dr sid has released Surelere, a mid tempo song ft Don Jazzy, and then the remix of the same song ft Wizkid, Phyno and Don Jazzy.

Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage– Artist
Tiwa Savage joined Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records in 2012
after the label she co-owns, 323 Entertainment teamed up with
the executive producer. She was one of the
lead artists on the record label’s first
compilation album entitled Solar Plexus. On the release of her debut song with the label, Eminado, which tells a love story of a woman dedicating her life to her lover, Don Jazzy takes the first verse of the song and adds more vocals which were unexpected of him.

Dija

Dija

Di’Ja – Artist
Hadiza Blell, better known by her stage
name Di’ja, is a Sierra Leonean Nigerian
recording artist, visual artist, fashion
designer, and songwriter. She is currently
signed to Mavin Records. In 2009, she
released her first single “Rock steady”, which
was nominated for “Best Urban/R&B Single”
at the 2009 Canadian Radio Music Awards.
Moreover, she won the “Best New Artist”
award at the 2008 Beat Music Awards.
Her music career started in 2008. In 2012,
Di’ja released several singles, including
“Dan’Iska (Rudebwoy)”, “Hold On (Ba Damuwa)”,
and “How Can We Be Friends”.
In 2013, she returned to Nigeria and signed a
recording deal,
Don Jazzy. On February 14, 2014 her record
deal with Don Jazzy was publicized.
On 14 February, 2014, Di’ja released her first
official single under Mavin Records. The song,
titled “Yaro”, is an up-tempo celebration of
love and commitment against all odds. The
song infuses Hausa and Krio dialects in honor
of her Nigerian and Sierra Leonean roots.

Reekado Bankz

Reekado Bankz

Reekado Banks – Artist
Reekado Banks, hmmmm,
Born Solomon Ayoleyi
Hanniel, Reekado Banks is
a gifted singer and song
writer. The final year
History and Strategic
student of the university
of Lagos, Akoka is young,
God fearing, fun and
spontaneous. They say, the smallest rat has the greatest destructive instincts. That’s one phrase to describe this fast rising and high speed artist. Reekado banks debut song with Mavin,“Turn It Up”
which features mavin’s
first lady “ TIWA
SAVAGE“ is a melodious
entreaty that gets you
up to dance. Definitely a
party anthem that is sure
to make it to the top of
DJs’ playlists.
Imagine blending country,
dancehall and afropop
music in a Don Jazzy way.
“Turn It Up” is just a
snippet of Reekado Banks
abilities. As a valuable
addition to the incredible
team of Don Jazzy, D’Prince, Tiwa Savage, Dr
Sid, Reekado Banks
joins
new label mate Di ja to
further strengthen the new
frontline of the Mavin 2.0

Korede Bello, the african princess

Korede Bello, the african princess

Korede Bello – Artist
Christened Korede Bello, the teenage sensation who is part of the Mavin 2.0 as Don Jazzy calls it is believed to be Nigeria’s next big star. His nick-name among the label, “Mavin Baby” is one that’s got girls tripping. He has a distinctive voice, a special style of song writing accomplished by his fluent guitar playing. His debut single for Marvin, African Princess, is receiving massive air-play on the radio and on phones too

Wande Coal‘s Departure
On July 31, 2013, Naij News reported that
Wande Coal allegedly parted ways with Mavin Records and established his own record label,
Black Diamond Entertainment. Sources
close to Information Nigeria said that Wande
Coal allegedly departed Mavin because he
believes that his music career cannot be
further advance by the revamped label.
Moreover, it was alleged that both Coal and
Jazzy disagreed over finances. On July 29,
2013, Wande Coal released and promoted a
new single titled “Kilaju” without the support
of Mavin Records. On November 7, 2013
Mavin Records sent out a press release,
officially announcing the departure of Wande
Coal from Mavin. The press release came
shortly after the twitter feud between Don
Jazzy and Wande Coal. On Tuesday,
November 5, 2013, Wande Coal released a
song titled “Baby Face” and credited Shizzi, a
record producer known for his affiliations with
Davido and the HKN Gang. Subsequently, Don
Jazzy accused Wande Coal of ‘intellectual
property theft’, tweeting, “How long will I
continue (to) sweat and some people will
choose to steal from me. I am nice and easy
going doesn’t mean (you) should disrespect
me.” Moreover, the Mavin Boss uploaded
a studio demo of the song that was
allegedely recorded a year ago. Wande Coal
tweeted several times, saying, “(please) Do
the right thing, bro, ASAP. God bless…It is
with sad heart I make this response. Steal
from you? I served for 10 years why are you not
happy with my progress? You have my phone
number, email address and my (direct
message) to communicate with me but you
choose twitter attention syndrome…After all
these years of (being) loyal to you I can never
believe you will ever say this to me. Trying to
bring me down on twitter.” In addition,
Coal tweeted a link to an “original” studio
version of the song. In an interview with
Premium Times, Demilade Olaosun, an
entertainment lawyer, commented on
intellectual property (IP). He said: “Now,
lawyers, being lawyers, may argue that the
song, although produced by Don Jazzy for
Wande (for Mavin Records) under the terms
of their contract, was merely a demo and had
not been delivered to the label as a
completed work, thus, allowing the artiste
make use of the song however he so
pleased…But I will insist that the work,
whether demo or fully mastered, since it was
produced, arranged and voiced by an official
of the label, makes it a property of the label.
This is a scenario I would however like to see
tested in a Nigerian court.” The lawyer
stated that since Coal’s recording contract
were not been made available to the public,
speculations cannot be made about the IP of
the recording sound. He said:

“While I am not privy to the content of the
contract between Wande and Mavin
Records, recording contracts typically
provide that the copyright in all materials
delivered by the artiste during the term of
the contract are properties of the label.
This means that ideally, when an artiste
leaves a label, he has no right to the
catalogue of works produced in that time
except, of course, if his contract has a
specific copyright reversion clause…Every
song has a minimum of three copyrights:
rights in the lyrics, sound recording (beat)
and actual recording of the song. Now, it is
not disputed that Don Jazzy produced the
beat for the song and from his tweet, what
he demanded was credit for his production
work.”

To crown it all, Mavin records released a new hit track Dorobucci by Don Jazzy ft all the labels artist. The Doro rendition has gained accepted momentum and permit me to call myself DoroBlogger 😉

So my dear readers, Do you think Mavin records is the best in Nigeria? Do they have a great personal relations with their artist? Do they release the best music in the country? Most importantly, can they sustain the hype? Have your say below.Keep In-touch with us
